Flower of the Month - Sunflower20 August 2013August is for many the last month of our summer in the UK. So before we move in the autumn again we have decided that there is no better way to celebrate summer than with the Helianthus (that’s Sunflower to those of you who’s Latin is not that great). The Sunflower is a genus of plants with circa 52 species in the Asteraceae family, all of which are native to North America. The common name "Sunflower" also applies to the popular annual species Helianthus annuus. Perennial Sunflower species are not as popular for gardens due to their tendency to spread rapidly and become invasive. These are usually tall annuals, growing to a height of between 50 to 390cm or more. Several ornamental cultivars have red-colored ray florets; all of them stem from a single original mutant. During growth, sunflowers tilt during the day to face the sun, but stop once they begin blooming.
